Stuffy löyly, darkened benches, a light that has gone, a heater that no longer heats. We explain where the fault usually is — and if you would rather not work it out yourself, describe it in the form and we will look for someone who covers your area.

The questions people ask most about sauna

All answers

Can you go to a sauna with a cold or a fever?

A sauna does not treat a cold or shorten one, and a fever already puts the body under strain. If you are ill, postpone the visit and ask a health professional about your own situation.

Who invented the sauna, and is it a Finnish invention?

The sauna has no single inventor: bathing with hot stones and water was known widely across the north in prehistoric times. What is Finnish is what the sauna became here — an everyday, unbroken practice that UNESCO added to its intangible heritage list in 2020.

How many saunas are there in Finland?

There is no exact figure, because saunas are not entered in any register. The most commonly quoted estimate is around three million saunas in a country of roughly 5.6 million people — an estimate, not a count.

How do you behave in a Finnish public sauna?

Shower before you go in, sit on a towel or a mat, ask before throwing more water on the stones, and keep your voice low. A sauna is not an endurance contest: step out whenever you want to.

At what age can a baby go to a sauna?

There is no universal age limit, and it is not something to settle from a web page: an infant regulates heat differently from an adult. Confirm the right time with your child health clinic or a paediatrician.

Does a sauna burn calories, and can you lose weight in one?

The weight you appear to lose in a sauna is fluid lost through sweating, not fat, and it returns as soon as you drink. A sauna is not a weight-loss method.

How close to a house or the shore can a sauna be built?

There is no single national distance: setbacks follow the local plan for the plot, the municipality's own building code and fire-safety requirements. The binding answer comes from your municipality's building control office.

How much does it cost to heat a sauna?

For an electric sauna it is the heater's power in kilowatts times the heating time times your own price per kilowatt-hour, so there is no single figure. The heater's rating is on its data plate.

Can you go to a sauna after a vaccination?

There is no general ban on sauna bathing after a vaccination, but if you feel feverish, tired or otherwise unwell afterwards, postpone the visit. Vaccine-specific advice comes from whoever gave the vaccination.

Can you take a phone into a sauna?

A phone does not belong in the hot room: heat and moisture damage the device, and in a shared sauna a camera is a privacy question. Many public saunas expect phones to stay in the changing room.
